Valentine's Day - an annual holiday of lovers falling on February  

14th.  The name comes from Saint Valentine, a real man, who  

was a priest  and lived in near Rome around 270 AD. The Emperor  

Claudius II wouldn’t  let young men get married at that time,  

because he wanted  them to be  soldiers, not husbands.  

Bishop Valentine felt sorry for  them, so  he used to help them meet  

and merry in secret.  

Currently, Valentine's Day is not only a day for lovers. This is  

the day  when we have the opportunity to show that we care about

someone important. We can please our parents or friends.   

We can also send our chosen ones an anonymous  

Valentine's card.   





The tradition of this day is to send love letters. In the West,   

especially  in Great Britain and the United States, Saint Valentine  

is the patron  of lovers. Therefore, February 14th became a special  

day  or exchanging  small gifts,  chocolates  and red roses.  



 

 It is now hugely popular throughout the world. In the UK, people  

send  cards, poems, flowers and presents to those they love  

(or want to love).  

Valentine’s Day is a big day in the shops, too, with many lovely  

romantic  goods to choose from. Some people feel it has become  

too commercial,  but is there really anybody who isn’t happy  

to receive a Valentine’s card?
