Grandmas and Grandpas are everything nice.

Like presents and candy and raspberry ice.

And chocolate fudge sundaes, with cherries on top.

And popcorn and peanuts and grape soda pop.

In winter or summer, in rain or in sun,

Grandmas and Grandpas are wonderful fun!!!

Grandmother's Day & Grandfather's Day

... are two separate holidays. Outside Poland, you may find them combined into one celebration, Grandparents' Day.

According to statistics, Polish grandparents are the second most devoted grandparents in European Union, right after Greeks. Elderly Poles spend around nine hours per week with their grandchildren. They also are more likely to have grandchildren at all, on average amounting to three.

Being a grandparent may sometimes feel like a career, or at least a part-time job! No wonder that people in Poland feel the need to show their gratitude towards grandmas and grandpas. Without these “institutions” our lives would be totally different!

Their hair is going white. – Włosy im siwieją.

Granddads are balding/going bald. – Dziadkowie łysieją.

They are hunched over. – Są zgarbieni

They have wrinkles. – Mają zmarszczki.

They walk with a stick/cane. – Chodzą o lasce.

Every year on January 21st, people across Poland take a moment to honour their grandmother. The idea of celebrating Grandmother’s Day first appeared in 1964. Grandfather’s Day is celebrated a day later, on January 22nd.

This day is widely celebrated across the country. Children and adults congratulate their grandmothers and give them small presents, greeting cards, flowers to show their gratitude and appreciation. The gifts are often handmade. Schools and kindergartens sometimes organise events to celebrate this holiday.

Grandchildren that are grown-up should really take their time and visit their grandma or grandpa!
